with Optional events on Saturday 9th October.
2009 Weekend events
Staffordshire - Stoke-on-Trent - Sunday 11 October 2009 with optional Carlton Ware related events on Saturday the 10th. Our short and also optional AGM was held on Saturday evening. We had a very full Carlton Ware-packed event for you this year and look forward to seeing you. We were so pleased with the venue last year we held it again in Etruria Hall, which is part of The Moat House Hotel.
To keep the cost down in these price conscious days, we booked the venue for one day, instead of two, but for those of you who like to spend the whole weekend in Staffordshire some leisurely Carlton Ware related events were arranged for Saturday the 10th.
Because we soon had more bookings than last year, we were able to fix the price at £45 per person, which is excellent value. This includes lunch and refreshments throughout the day, and also covers the cost of hiring the room and equipment. Accommodation is not included, so that you could make your own arrangements to suit you pocket.
Sunday's events will include the following:-
Derek Towns gaves a talk on Carlton China produced when Carlton Ware took over the Birks Rawlins China works in 1928. For about 3 years a large number of designs were implemented.
Appropriately, tea and coffee was served afterwards.
Mike Maunder introduced us to the extraordinary range of Blushware decorations that Carlton Ware began to make in the early 1890s.
We tried to persuade him to serve us wine from his many claret jugs! 1936 Bordeaux was a good vintage, if you are stuck for choice Mike.
Local Ceramics expert Kathy Niblett kindly offered to give us a talk on Wedgwood, concentrating on the years in which Carlton Ware was produced at Copeland Street, so it will be interesting to draw a comparison between the two potteries, there are bound to be parallels, We suspect Fairyland lustre will be one. The picture on the left shows an aerial view of The Potteries taken in the 1930s, before the multitude of bottle kilns were demolished.
As usual, lunch was provided in the restaurant and was included in the cost.
By popular request our identification session returned, so that you could bring items you would like our experts to comment on.
It is often surprising what rarities appear, sometimes causing bafflement, though the former employees, who are always our special guests, often throw light on any mysteries and of course correct us if we make mistakes.
During the afternoon we showed a short video and held our raffle, which this year wwas be brief. Vanessa Barnish, Cuthbert Wiltshaw's granddaughter, drew the tickets.
We also welcomed, all the way from Australia, Fred and Elaine Williams.
For a bit of fun, Terry and Harvey ,with help from Peter, John and Ian operated the Carlton Collider, which we did not have time to demonstrate last year.
We hope that you find these events inviting. If you think you would like to join us for 2010 then click here. Further details can then be sent to you. 2009 Optional Saturday events.
For those of you who like to spend the weekend in Staffordshire, we planned a couple of leisurely trips on the Saturday.
The first was a visit to the house in which Cuthbert Wiltshaw and his family lived in the 1920s. This now houses a very interesting museum, which looks at local life and businesses in past Victorian times.
At 12.30 we made our way to the fabulous new must-see Wedgwood Museum where we will had lunch in the Ivy House Restaurant at Wedgwood and to view the galleries. The entrance fee was £6 per person. You could also have gone into the Visitor Centre, a joint ticket can be purchased for £9.50 giving you entry to both areas.
You can choose how long you wish to spend at the centre and then make your way to your accommodation. If you are not staying at the Moat House Hotel, where the Sunday meeting takes place, you are welcome to join those that are for an evening meal. The time will be arranged on the day.
