My First Post…

Hello all and welcome to my first eBay watch report.

As usual, There have been some interesting auctions on eBay recently. One which caught my eye was a stunning complete coffee set in Fantasia 3388 being sold by “catstealer” a seller from York in England. Although there was only one bid on this, the set sold for £1700. There would have been at least 2 bids, but the starting price had one nought too many for a person of my slender means, regretfully (all donations in plain brown envelopes, please).

Another interesting item was a charming candle holder in the Carre 3659 being sold by “harwil” a seller from Calgary, in Canada. This attracted 3 bids and sold for £77.13 (US $123.50). I was going to bid on this, but completely forgot when the auction was ending. Ooops, sorry about that, “harwil”. I will try harder next time.

By way of emphasising how broad a church Carlton Ware is, I spotted a set of 3 Guinness wall plaques graduated in size from 6½” to 10″ and said to be in “super condition”, which were auctioned by “stirlingsales-19”, a seller who hails from the “sunny south” of England – I do like a person with an optimistic outlook on life, don’t you? After a hard fought battle involving 21 bids by 8 different bidders the set eventually sold for £137.00.

Finally, my eye was also drawn to a slender 7″ tall Ginger Jar in  Feathertailed Bird & Flower 3355 being sold by “jeepstar09” a seller from the Wirral, in England. This little beauty created an epic battle and eventually amassed an astonishing 33 bids and finished at £335.00.

Well done masterspy. Those Toucans seem a might cheap to what they were a few years ago. I guess all the fakes on the market have driven down the price of the originals somewhat. Keep searching and reporting.

      Hi Derek,
I think it is probably the difficulty of telling some of the better fakes from the originals given the limitation of the picture size and quality on ebay and once a brand is tarnished by fakes (as I believe Burberry is now for example) it is difficult to re-establish the previous market position.

      Hello again Derek,
Toucans are not my area of knowledge, so before I included the item I asked a leading collector to comment on whether they were real, as I am aware of the large number of fakes on the market. The comment came back that they looked real enough. As indeed they do, because they are a picture of real toucans, but this is not what was sent and the buyer was very unhappy. Having discussed the matter with members of the committee, a further article will appear elsewhere on the site in due course.

Nice to see the pictures – October will be an interesting month to report about

      Hi Carole,
      I think so.
I have an angle which might prove interesting (see my exchange with Ian and Sue below my Introduction article), but I am afraid you will have to wait for a little while longer before you discover what it is.
A large cash donation to Bank of Switzerland, A/C No. 999111999 (Mr and Mrs ebay masterspy Savings Account) might loosen my tongue, of course.

I did not see the Fantasia coffee set so thanks for including it in your first posting. There will not be many complete sets in this pattern still in existence.

      Hi Terry,
I think this coffee set was easily the stand out item of the month of September on ebay. As you say there aren’t going to be many of them around now. Could do with finding a couple of them in my cupboard, but no such luck I am afraid.

Hi. This is fantastic to get updates from you, and I really look forward to the next one. I have just got home from an auction where I managed to get an Arc Money Box at a really good price so a lovely addition to me collection. Janette

      Hello Janette,
Nice to have you on board as a reader. Thank you for your kind words. My next offering is already in the hands of “webby”, i.e. Harvey Pettit the webmaster who says he will publish it to the website early next week (no pressure Harvey). I am sure there are many people out there who collect CW money boxes, so I will happily look to do an article about them in the future. Please feel free to post a comment at any time and I will answer as soon as I can, subject to business commitments.
      Best wishes,

    Hello Rebecca,
Nice to have you on board as a reader. You have taken over from Charlie in California as my furthest away known reader (sorry Charlie). I am really glad you are enjoying my postings. Another one will be written this weekend and will be on the website soon, so keep your eyes open for it. Feel free to offer any opinions or suggestions you may have on any future posts.
    Best wishes,
